As with almost all plastics polycarbonate recycling is very easy. As a plastic, polycarbonate is very strong and resilient and unlike some other plastics it can be totally transparent. It is easy to manufacture from and is most often injection moulded but can also be thermoformed.
Even in its non-pure form polycarbonate recycling is still possible, as an example PC is often combined with ABS to make PCABS. This can still be recycled.
When polycarbonate products are manufactured, they should be marked with a recycling number in a recycling triangle. There is not a specific number for polycarbonate, but there should be a number “7” and hopefully say PC. If this is not the case and the moulding can be traced back to the manufacturer then they will be able to confirm the polymer used. Otherwise testing needs to be done to ascertain whether a plastic is polycarbonate or not.
Polycarbonate is used in a wide range of applications, due to its unique set of properties. As examples:
- Polycarbonate is used extensively for car light lenses due to its low weight and high impact resistance; this material will be coated but recycling is still possible.
- Polycarbonate is used in construction and house-building as it is used in light fittings, conservatory roofing etc. If these products are clean at the end of their life and are well segregated from any contaminates then these polycarbonates can also be recycled
- Drinking water fountains have become more and more popular in recent years and their water bottles are manufactured from polycarbonate. We are happy to help with this type of polycarbonate recycling
- CDs and DVDs are also made from polycarbonate and whilst these are printed on and coated, there is still a market for recycling these products
